What Makes A Great Show Great?
The definition of a great show differs for everyone. For me, a great show is one from which you have something to take away. This may seem cliché, but a great show is one that gives me food for thought or inspires me to do what I want. It could be as simple as a quote that serves as a triggering point. But, a great drama leaves its own kind of mark.
Of course, this is not to say that we can leave behind the basics like good writing, directing, acting etc. However, if a show has just that, then it a good show, not a great one. A great show also has the power to take in the audience as if they were part of the story from the get-go.
With that criteria, only a handful of dramas are considered great. To name a few:
1. Descendants of the Sun:
If you’ve seen the last episode of the drama, you might know why it is named Descendants of the Sun. As a human, you have a responsibility to help people, not just of your own country but others as well. Borders were made for geographical division. Thinking beyond borders is part of what makes us human.
2. Welcome to Waikiki:
You won’t always succeed in doing what you want to. But, you can’t give up before even starting anything.
3. Just Between Lovers:
Traumas are hard to be forget. But, you can’t let them consume you. It’s not your fault, so don’t beat yourself up.
4. Queen of the Ring:
Be yourself. A pretty face isn’t everything.
5. Pinocchio:
You stand up for what you believe in, no matter how great the opposition is.
6. Because This Is My First Life:
One quote would pretty much sum up my love for the drama. “Just because you lived yesterday, does not mean you know everything about today.”
Some of my most favourite dramas (Scarlet Heart, Entertainers, Father Is Strange) don’t fall under the criteria of great dramas.
